Google Ads for services: prepare your first Search campaign

Connect customer intent to an ad and landing page: choose keywords, organize groups, verify measurement and assess enquiries from a first Search campaign.

A Search campaign starts with a need the business can serve. Someone searches, sees an advertisement, opens a page and decides whether contacting the company is worthwhile. Each step should preserve the connection with the same underlying requirement.

This guide uses a fictional laptop repair service operating in a defined area. Its objective is suitable diagnostic enquiries. The examples explain configuration and analysis decisions; they are not reported results from a campaign that was actually run.

Define the enquiry worth measuring

Record what makes an enquiry useful: device type, problem, location and contact information. Staff can then confirm whether the service is appropriate. This definition helps evaluate incoming requests and select an event that meaningfully represents a campaign result.

Confirm who responds and during which hours. Advertising can bring a suitable person when nobody can answer the telephone. Connect scheduling and page wording to the actual intake process, including how messages arriving outside working hours are handled.

Set a test budget the business can support and identify what it should help you learn. Separate media expenditure from management, content and page development. The test is a learning allocation; possible volume depends on demand and competition in the selected market.

Group searches around customer problems

Collect expressions from real conversations and the service catalogue. Screen replacement, battery replacement and diagnosis of a laptop that will not start may need different explanations. Group terms when one advertisement and one page can answer the corresponding needs well.

Consider intent rather than an isolated word. A do-it-yourself repair query may indicate research, while a local repair shop search may suggest a nearby service requirement. Verify those assumptions in campaign data; phrasing alone does not establish someone’s future decision.

Prepare exclusions for activities the company does not provide. If the service does not sell parts separately, some component purchase searches may be unsuitable. Apply exclusions carefully while retaining searches that can lead to relevant repair work.

Understand what matching options control

Google explains broad, phrase and exact matching. Exact matching considers meaning or intent rather than requiring identical wording. Choose the matching approach together with the bidding strategy and your ability to check incoming enquiry quality.

Begin with a keyword list you can understand and review. After activation, examine available search terms and their relationship to the offer. Add or adjust exclusions based on observed situations, then review how the change affects suitable enquiries.

Keep geography as a separate decision. Configure towns and location options around actual service coverage. A business accepting devices by courier may serve a different area from a workshop that receives customers only at its premises.

Write advertisements that prepare the same destination

Headlines and descriptions should explain the service, a verifiable distinction and the next step. For our repair example, opening hours, diagnosis and coverage may be relevant. Use conditions confirmed by staff and kept current on the destination page.

For responsive search ads, prepare assets that make sense in different combinations. Google’s responsive ad recommendations provide writing guidance. Read possible combinations to remove repetition and wording that depends on one particular headline appearing beforehand.

Choose the action according to the real process: request diagnosis, discuss the problem or arrange an appointment. An advertisement about a specific repair should lead to relevant information so visitors immediately recognize the subject of their search.

Prepare the page before paying for visits

The page should explain what is repaired, how assessment works and what information customers need to provide. Real photographs, location and contact conditions add context. Put important answers before an extended company introduction so people can assess suitability promptly.

Test forms and telephone actions on customer devices. Check the confirmation and destination of submitted information. People need to understand whether they sent an enquiry or confirmed an appointment; interface wording should reflect the stage actually completed.

Configure conversion measurement around the outcome

For a form, measure successful receipt of the enquiry. Telephone and WhatsApp clicks can remain separate indicators of interest rather than being treated as completed conversations. Check duplicates, test information and the effect of user choices on measurement tools.

If staff qualify enquiries later, retain an identifier and a consistent process. Google Ads offline imports offer a route for subsequent results under platform conditions. Implement this when data quality and responsibility support a reliable import.

Read the report as a series of questions

Start with expenditure, available search terms and validated enquiries. A low cost per click can accompany unsuitable demand, while a higher cost may produce useful requests. Compare these observations in the context of the same offer, area and analysis period.

When visits produce few contacts, investigate the page and offer conditions. When conversations begin but stall, ask staff about recurring questions and service availability. This identifies the appropriate intervention instead of changing advertisements for a problem occurring after enquiry intake.

Adjust one important hypothesis at a time

Record the change, reason and review period. It might involve a more specific destination, an exclusion or different wording. Keep enough conditions stable to interpret the result while recognizing that market demand and competitors can also change during observation.

Expand when you can explain where suitable enquiries come from and whether the team can handle them. Effective advertising connects search, offer, measurement and response. Adjust the budget in relation to that connection rather than to click volume alone.
